Not illustrated. 1834 Excerpt: ... not, in my opinion, require its Drawback on Stone assistance. I do not think that glass bottles would be superseded by stone bottles, although the first be liable to duty and the second be free. Supposing, therefore, that the duty was removed from the stone bottles, several advantages to trade would be attained, exclusive of the direct relief to the manufacture itself. The existence of the Excise duty renders it necessary to subject the bottles to duties of Customs when imported in the character of packages; and it renders a drawback also necessary in the reversed case of an exportation. These evils will cease with the duty; and commerce in liquids of small value may be considerably increased. The duty on the bottle alone falls as so heavy a tax on foreign mineral waters, as to be almost prohibitory as an import, which might otherwise be carried to a great extent, and be very beneficial to the shipping.
